Research themes
Our group uses the beta-proteobacterium Rubrivivax gelatinosus as a model to study respiration and photosynthesis. This bacterium adaptates quickly its metabolism in function of the environmental conditions and particularly the oxygen tension in the medium. Our experiments combine molecular genetics, structural biochemistry and biophysics.
We have identified most of the genes involved in photosynthesis and respiration. We are studying their expression and their regulation by oxygen. We are also investigating the role of the respiration in photosynthesis.
Recently we have identified many assembly genes of the cytochrome c oxidases that show high similarities to those identified in eukaryotes, and started a project with the aim to define the role of these genes during the biogenesis of these oxidases.
Key points for the last years
Discovery of a second Rieske protein,
Identification of two transcriptional regulators sensitive to the oxygen tension,
• PpsR: involved in both negative and positive control of the photosynthetic genes,
• FnrL: a global Regulator of Photosynthesis and Respiration,
Identification of terminal oxidases (cbb3, caa3 and bd) and their crucial role to induce and control photosynthesis,
Evidence for domain movement of the CcoO monoheme subunit of the cbb3 -oxidase from Rubrivivax gelatinosus. (coll. BIP-Marseille),
Identification of assembly genes of cytochrome c oxidases that show high similarities to those identified in eukaryotes.
